Salon, the epistle of the Über Left, is doing its best to cast any comparison between the actions of the Weimar Republic in 1928 prior to Hitler’s purge of the Jews and Obama’s attack on the constitution, framed as gun control for our own safety, as reckless and frenzied right wing fear mongering. We should expect nothing less.
But in the light of a rational argument, is the comparison that far off? Is the fear understandable?
The Nazi Weapons act of early 1938 strengthened the 1928 Weimar law and further required all German citizens who wished to purchase or own firearms to register with the government and undergo a background check. The Act gave the Nazi’s complete authority over which guns could or could not be owned, and which ammunition would be available.
But that wasn’t the end. It was only the beginning. In November of 1938, the Nazi’s began using these “registration” lists to identify and disarm the entire population of German Jews prior to the Night of Broken Glass attacks by the Nazi’s on the Jewish Ghettos.
Other European countries also had laws requiring records to be kept on gun ownership by the government. Hitler’s forces used these lists during the occupation of Czechoslovakia and Poland and others to disarm the population upon invasion.
The current acts of our government currently under review not only harken back to darkest times in human history but also should make the hair on the back of our necks stand up. Especially if enacted by Executive Fiat.
The 2nd amendment is very clear. It is not about Militia’s only for national defense of outside invaders. In the version ratified by the states, it reads:
A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state,
the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.
These are two distinctively different concepts; the requirement for a Militia to protect the people from the government, and gun ownership as a right of the people protected “from” the government.
We don’t have to look far to see another stark example of how gun registration and gun control can lead to totalitarian control. Look 90 miles south of Key West to Cuba. The parallels between Castro and Hitler on Gun Control and Governmental control are well documented. The day after ceasing power, Castro sent his troops out using Gun Registration Lists to disarm the population of the Island. Eliminating the possibility of any armed resistance to the Socialist take over.
It is probably a stretch to think that the Obama Administration would enact a confiscation action through Executive Order, at once trashing both the 2nd and the 4th Amendments. But given his proclivity toward unilateral actions and his routine threats to by-pass Congress on many issues, do we have a right to be concerned?
I think magazines like Salon and other Socialist leaning publications and news outlets do a tremendous disservice to their readers by over simplifying the issues into a politicized, Right Wing, Left Wing ideological war. I think Americans, including our Congress, are as terrible with History as they are with Math and there are many more examples of gun control leading to a direct threat to personal liberty for those willing to do their own research. Even stopping with just the two examples above it is clear to see that we are heading down a dangerous path which left unchecked and unbalanced may have the unintended, (or intended) effect of bringing us on a collision course with history.
